Conseal is a desktop app for Windows and Mac that finds sensitive information in a document on your own computer and either redacts it for good or swaps it for labels you can later restore, and its pricing page lists $29.99 a month after a 7-day free trial. The site says processing is 100% local, that the app still redacts with the internet disconnected, and that files never leave the machine (conseal.ai). Those are vendor statements we have not tested.

PlatformsWindows and macOS
File typesPDF, Word, Excel, text and images

RedactPermanent removal with no mapping kept; described as right for court filings and anything leaving the organization
AnonymizeReplaces each item with a label such as [PERSON_1] and keeps the mapping locally so the original values can be restored after an AI tool returns its work

What Conseal is

The homepage headline is “AI that protects documents entirely on your machine”. The idea is to put a local step before any cloud AI tool: Conseal scans a file, flags personal and confidential items, and you choose to redact them permanently or anonymize them with labels (conseal.ai). It is a pre-processing tool, not a drafting or research assistant, so it sits beside the AI you already use rather than replacing it.

How the redact and restore workflow works

For documents you want an AI tool to analyze, the site describes three steps: open the file and scan it locally, anonymize it so each sensitive item becomes a label, then send the protected file to any AI tool and upload the response back so Conseal restores the real values from the local mapping (conseal.ai). For documents leaving your hands for good, such as court filings or public records responses, you redact with no mapping saved, which the site says cannot be reversed. The legal use case on the site is contract review with client details replaced before the prompt and restored on return.

Who Conseal is for

Best for: Solo lawyers and small teams that already use ChatGPT, Claude or similar tools and want a repeatable local step that keeps client names, numbers and addresses out of the prompt.

Its logic fits lawyers who cannot or will not upload raw client files to a cloud tool, and who would otherwise redact by hand. It does not decide whether an AI tool is acceptable for your matter or your jurisdiction; that remains a confidentiality and engagement-letter question. Conseal pricing

The pricing page lists a 7-day free trial and then $29.99 a month, billed monthly, with automatic detection, anonymize and restore, unlimited operations, offline processing and the supported file types included. It states one device at a time and says teams can add seats and invite teammates from the account; Teams and Enterprise pricing is not published (conseal.ai/pricing). Ask how seats are priced before you roll it out to a firm, since the page shows one price.

What to test before you rely on it

Masking is only as good as detection. The site does not publish how often Fast Mode or Intelligent Mode miss a name, a matter number or text inside a scanned image, and we did not test it. Run it on a closed matter and read the output page by page before you send anything to an AI tool. Check that labels do not leak context on their own, for example a unique job title next to a [PERSON_1] label, and confirm where the label mapping file is stored and who can open it.

Before you rely on this

We did not test the product. Local processing, offline operation and reversibility are the vendor's statements. A redaction tool is a safeguard, not a substitute for your firm's confidentiality policy, your client's consent, or your jurisdiction's rules on AI use. A lawyer still reads what the AI returns.

Conseal alternatives

If the goal is a vetted AI workspace rather than a local masking step, compare ChatGPT for legal work and Claude for Legal, and see our checklist for evaluating legal AI vendors. For e-discovery redaction at scale, see Logikcull.

How to choose

The bottom line: Conseal is a $29.99 a month on-device redact-and-restore app for lawyers who use general AI tools. Its local processing and reversibility are vendor statements, so test detection on a closed matter first.
