Who each is for

Legora. It's the broader workspace. By its own pages, one platform covers legal research, drafting in Word, bulk document review in a spreadsheet-like table and reusable workflows, aimed at lawyers across M&A, litigation, banking, tax and in-house. Its Tabular Review page speaks to M&A and litigation lawyers and doesn't mention contracts specifically, so day-to-day contract review is one use among many. See our Legora profile.

Luminance. It's the contract-centered platform. Its negotiation page says it marks up contracts, flags deviations and applies approved positions from your playbooks, and it pairs that with a portfolio repository you can question and a workflow layer from intake to signature, for legal and the business teams around it. It's thinner on general legal research and drafting beyond the contract. See Luminance standalone.

Word. Both say they work in Microsoft Word. Legora's add-in page describes drafting, redlining, automated Playbooks (starting positions, non-negotiables, fallbacks) and preset actions. Luminance's negotiation page says it generates "context-aware markups directly in Microsoft Word" and lists Word among its integrations; we found no standalone add-in page on its site, so we can't say how far the Word experience goes.

Deployment. Legora lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, GDPR and HIPAA, says its technical team is based in Sweden, and claims zero AI training on your data. Luminance lists ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type II and links a trust portal. Neither page we read states a deployment model.

Pricing, as shown on October 21, 2026

Legora: not published. The homepage, Word add-in and Tabular Review pages offer "Book a demo" only; a /pricing page returned a 404.

Luminance: not published. The homepage and product pages offer "Request a demo"; a /pricing page returned a 404.

What we couldn't verify

  • Accuracy of either product's review or redlines on real contracts.
  • Deployment model for both (cloud, private cloud, or other) and data residency options.
  • Customer counts: Luminance's "1,000+ enterprises" and "75% reduction in repetitive contract review work" are its own marketing claims with no method on the page.
  • Certification scope and dates: we read the lists on each homepage, not the audit reports. Both link trust centers we didn't request access to.
  • Whether Luminance has a Word add-in as a separate product, and which integrations (DocuSign, LexisNexis, Outlook) are included in a given plan.
  • Legora's integrations: the page names an Integrations product but gives no detail.
  • Anything behind the demo walls, including trials, minimum seats and contract terms.

How we'd test the two in a week

  1. Pick five executed contracts you've already negotiated (an NDA, an MSA, a DPA, a vendor order form, one oddball) and write down the issues you know are in them.
  2. Ask each vendor to load your own playbook, not a sample one, and run both tools in Word on the same three contracts.
  3. Score changes missed, changes invented and redlines that follow your fallbacks, with a lawyer reading every output.
  4. Test the non-review work you'd actually pay for: Legora's research and Tabular Review on a set of 50 documents, Luminance's repository questions on your signed contracts.
  5. Ask each for its data processing agreement, deployment options and what happens to your documents on termination.

Questions and answers

Legora vs Luminance: which is better for contract review?

We haven't tested either, so we can't rank them. By their own descriptions, Luminance is built around contract negotiation and a contract repository, while Legora is a wider legal workspace where contract review sits alongside research and drafting. Trial both on your own contracts.

How does Legora compare to Luminance for contract review?

Both say they apply your playbooks and redline in Microsoft Word. Legora adds Tabular Review for reviewing many documents in a table and legal research; Luminance adds a portfolio repository and intake-to-signature workflows. Accuracy claims on both sites are unverified.

How much does Legora or Luminance cost?

Neither publishes a price on the pages we read on October 21, 2026. Both route you to a demo request, so expect a quote after a sales call.

Does Luminance work in Word like Legora does?

Luminance's negotiation page says it generates markups directly in Microsoft Word and lists Word as an integration. Legora has a dedicated Word Add-in page. We didn't find a separate Luminance add-in page, so ask for a demo in Word.

Which suits an in-house team versus a law firm?

Legora lists law firms, mid-sized firms, in-house and public sector as audiences; Luminance features legal, procurement, finance and sales users. The in-house question is whether you need a workspace for lawyers or a contract layer for the business too.
