Most copilots cover some mix of these tasks.

  • Draft first versions of memos, emails, clauses and pleadings from the lawyer's instructions and materials.
  • Summarize long documents, transcripts and records.
  • Search and answer questions across a firm's own documents or a legal research database.
  • Review contracts against a playbook and flag deviations.
  • Check drafts for citation and consistency problems.

What defines a copilot is where it sits and who is in control. It works in the document, the inbox or the matter, and every output goes to a person for review.

How is a copilot different from a chatbot, an agent and Microsoft Copilot?

What it isWho steersExample of the category
ChatbotA general-purpose model in a chat windowThe user, prompt by promptGeneral assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude
Legal AI copilotAn assistant embedded in legal workflows and dataThe lawyer, task by taskLegal platforms such as Harvey and CoCounsel; vendors label similar products differently (Harvey's site speaks of "agents"), so judge by function, not by label
AgentA system that plans and carries out multi-step workThe system, within limits set by the lawyerSee Agentic AI
Microsoft CopilotOne vendor's assistant across Microsoft 365The user, inside Word, Outlook and TeamsMicrosoft Copilot for Legal

The boundaries blur because vendors label products differently. Judge a product by what it can access, what it can do without asking, and what it logs, not by the word on the box.

Ask for these before you trust one with client work.

  1. Sources. Every factual or legal statement links to the document or authority it came from.
  2. Scope of access. Which matters, folders and systems it can read, and how permissions follow the user.
  3. Data handling. Retention, training use, subprocessors and deletion. Ask each vendor; terms differ.
  4. Logs. A record of prompts, outputs and who reviewed them.
  5. Limits. What it will refuse or flag instead of guessing.

Accuracy varies by tool and task, and vendor claims need testing. A preregistered study from Stanford researchers found that Lexis+ AI and Thomson Reuters' Westlaw AI-Assisted Research and Ask Practical Law AI each hallucinated between 17% and 33% of the time on the researchers' queries, which is lower than a general-purpose chatbot but far from zero. Magesh et al., "Hallucination-Free? Assessing the Reliability of Leading AI Legal Research Tools" The study tested specific products at a specific time on a specific query set, and the figure comes from the May 2024 preprint's abstract, so newer product versions may perform differently. What are the professional-responsibility duties?

A copilot does not change your duties. Competence, confidentiality and supervision apply. ABA Formal Opinion 512 applies Model Rules 1.1, 1.6 and 5.3 to generative AI tools, and Rule 11 makes the signer responsible for what is filed in federal court. Rule 11 See also the Rule 5.3 supervision guide.

How should a firm choose one?

Match the copilot to the work, then test.

Pilot on closed matters and score output against what a senior lawyer would have produced.

Questions and answers

What is a legal AI copilot?

An AI assistant embedded in a lawyer's workflow that drafts, summarizes, searches or reviews under the lawyer's direction. The lawyer reviews every output and remains responsible for it.

Is Microsoft Copilot a legal AI copilot?

It is a general assistant inside Microsoft 365 that lawyers use for legal work and can be used alongside legal tools. Check Microsoft's current materials for any legal-specific offerings.

What is the difference between a legal AI copilot and a legal AI agent?

A copilot responds to the lawyer task by task. An agent plans and performs multi-step work with more autonomy. Products often combine both, so check what the tool does without asking.

Can a legal AI copilot replace a lawyer?

No. It drafts and organizes. The lawyer decides, signs and answers for the work under the professional rules.

Is it safe to put client documents into a legal AI copilot?

It depends on the vendor's data terms, your configuration and your duty of confidentiality. Review retention, training use and subprocessors before using client data.
