Who each is for

Filevine. It lists personal injury, mass torts, insurance defense and criminal defense among its practices, and sells modules (Matters, Intake, Depositions, Signatures, LOIS). That breadth is the draw for a litigation team that wants one system, and the cost is that you can't see a price without a sales call. See our Filevine profile and Filevine pricing explainer.

Clio. We couldn't open its site, so we won't describe it. Our own page compares it head to head: Filevine vs Clio, and the Clio Duo profile covers its AI add-on. Treat both as unverified until you read Clio's pricing yourself.

MyCase. The pitch is a clear three-tier ladder with the AI and discovery tools on the top tier, and a 10-day free trial. It reads as a general small-firm tool; we found nothing on its pricing page aimed at high-volume litigation. More in MyCase IQ.

Smokeball. Four plans from billing only to an operations platform, with Intake, Archie AI and Workflows as add-ons or inclusions depending on plan. No price is shown, so it is no easier to budget than Filevine. See Smokeball and the Clio Duo vs MyCase vs Smokeball comparison.

PracticePanther. The most transparent ladder in this list and the lightest. The page describes time tracking, contacts and matters on the entry plan, with accounting only at the top plan. It doesn't claim litigation or PI depth.

CASEpeer. The closest to Filevine's PI core: it describes itself as built specifically for personal injury firms, and it states per-user prices in its FAQ. If you are not a PI firm it is likely the wrong fit.

Litify. Positioned for high-volume intake and matters in PI, insurance defense and immigration, plus corporate legal departments. Quote-based, like Filevine.

What we couldn't verify

  • Clio's plans, prices and positioning: both its pricing page and the pricing URL variant returned 403.
  • Any Filevine, Smokeball or Litify price.
  • Security certifications, uptime and data residency for every vendor.
  • Customer counts and the outcome figures vendors cite (Filevine's percentages have no method on the page).
  • Which integrations (accounting, email, e-filing, medical records) each plan includes.
  • Migration support and cost of moving off Filevine.
  • Whether MyCase and PracticePanther can handle high-volume litigation workflows.

How to choose

  1. List what you use in Filevine today: intake, document assembly, depositions, medical chronologies, client portal. Mark the ones you'd miss.
  2. Cross anything with a published price off by plan: MyCase, PracticePanther and CASEpeer you can budget today, so start there if cost is the reason you're leaving.
  3. Ask Smokeball and Litify for a written quote at your seat count, and ask Filevine for yours, so you compare quote to quote.
  4. Take one closed matter with its documents and run it through a trial of two finalists. Count what you can't do.
  5. Ask each for its data export format and security documentation before you commit.

What are the best Filevine alternatives?

It depends on your practice, and we haven't tested these tools. By their own descriptions, CASEpeer and Litify target personal injury, MyCase and PracticePanther suit smaller firms with published prices, and Smokeball is quote-based. The table maps each.
